We were asked by a few visitors to this site if we could post some "wild horse" activities. It seemed like a logical request, so here you go! There's not much here yet, but if you all keep us posted as to what's going on out there, we'll put it up on the web.

We have organized a group of mustang and burro owners to participate in Equifest '98, which is being held May 16-17 in San Mateo, CA (between San Francisco and San Jose, on the west side of the Bay). Equifest is a 2-day equine expo featuring breed and training demonstrations, workshops, seminars, and vendors. This is their second year, and I believe they are hoping to eventually have Equifest become similar to the week-long Equitana held in Kentucky. Our goal in participating is to help expand public awareness about mustangs and the Adopt-a-Horse-Program by providing information and exhibiting formerly-wild horses. The BLM is joining us in the parades and demonstrations and will be available at their booth for questions. Here is a list of our mustang activities for this event: 1) Information booth - Sat and Sun, all day - will have available material relating to the care and training of mustangs and burros: books for sale, free information handouts, photo albums of adopters and their animals on display. Staffed by volunteers who can answer questions and direct people to various resources on mustangs and burros. 2) Parade - Sat and Sun, 12:00-1:00pm - Parade group of mustangs, in-hand and under saddle, with an announcement referring people to our booth and afternoon demonstrations. 3) Demonstrations - "Mustangs of America" - Sat, 4:40-5:30pm, and Sun, 10:10-10:40am Program at this time entails: a) Announcement of a brief introductory statement on the wild horse program and the group exhibiting; b) Individuals leading/riding their horse in the exhibition area one at a time while the announcer reads a biography of that horse and rider relationship (HMA origin, adoption date, activities, etc). c) Our final demonstration is with a 5 year old dressage mustang. Levi is nearly 17 hands high, has successfully competed at 1st Level, and is now beginning 2nd Level. He is currently vying for the USDF Breed award, sponsored by the American Mustang & Burro Association. His trainer will be riding him in a freestyle routine set to music. d) After the final demo, all horses and owners file back into the exhibit area for a couple laps while announcer reads concluding statement. e) Announcement inviting spectators to the outside rail for a question-and-answer period with the owners and their horses. The current list of volunteers and participants consists of listmembers from the Wildhorses listserve group, AMBA members, individual wild horse enthusiasts, and representatives of the Bureau of Land Management. Motorhomes, campers, horse trailer/camper combos, and tents are all welcome. We are planning a get-together potluck for Saturday night.
